Dear Camp Highlander Parent,

You’re about to do something brave—and we know it’s not easy. You’re getting ready to send your child to Camp Highlander. The same child you’ve nurtured, protected, cheered for, and loved more than words can say. And now, you’re entrusting that child to me—a counselor you may not know yet—to care for them here in the mountains of North Carolina. While I may not fully understand the emotions you’re feeling, I imagine the questions you’re asking:

Will they make friends? Will they feel safe? Will they be happy? Will they grow?

I can’t promise to have all the answers, but I can promise you this:

  • I will treat your child like they are the most important person in the world—because to someone (you), they are.

  • I will keep them safe: physically, emotionally, and socially. They will know I have their back.

  • I will celebrate who they are and help them discover more of who they can become.

  • I will encourage them when they’re unsure, comfort them when they miss home, and laugh with them when they’re covered in mud.

  • I will be someone you’d be proud to have in your child’s corner and an example they can look up to.

Many moments will be magical. Some will be challenging. But every day, I’ll show up for your child with heart, purpose, and care.

I chose to be here this summer. I chose this job because I believe in camp—its power to grow confidence, connection, and joy. Highlander has already given me lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. Now, I have the incredible privilege of helping your child create their own.

So who am I?

I might be a college athlete, a future teacher, a musical theater major, a rock climber, a book lover, or someone who just really loves s’mores and silly songs. But more than anything, I’m someone who wants to see your child thrive.

I want them to try new things. To grow and overcome failure. To laugh until their belly hurts. To learn how to be a good friend. To hike, swim and sing. To feel proud of who they are becoming.

And when they return home—muddy, sun-kissed, maybe a little tired—I hope you see someone stronger, more confident, and filled with memories that will last a lifetime.

Thank you for trusting me with your camper. It’s the best job in the world!

With gratitude, A Highlander Counselor
