The forecast for the week is predicting pretty wet days as a weather front slowly moves through Western North Carolina. We have had many wet days over the years at camp, but they are always accompanied by laughter, fun and unforgettable memories. Though the skies are gray, there is the brightest sunshine in the eyes and the hearts of our campers.

As adults, most of us have lost the appreciation for rain and the fun that it can provide. The fact is, rain doesn’t really bother us at Highlander. It is part of the day, but it is not what we remember about the day. At camp rain is not an inconvenience, it is an opportunity. . The rain makes the day different, special, and honestly, tons of fun.

While today there were moments where the sun was trying to shine through the clouds, the rain kept coming back. There were two cabins on the athletic field today playing a fierce game of Riverball. The competition was stiff and the game was tied. Then the sky opened up and the rain started to fall again. Andy, our Land Sports activity counselor, threw his hands in the air and said “Rain or Shine Baby, the game must go on!” And it did! Those campers played their hearts out, laughing and having the time of their life…as if the rain were not even there.

This afternoon as I drove around the apple cart, I was overwhelmed with “AWESOME, AMAZING, FUN, FANTASTIC AND GREAT” when I asked the campers, “So how’s your day going?” The fun was in full swing at camp today…rain or shine baby, it’s always a GREAT DAY at Camp Highlander!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Weather: We had a bookend day of rain…from wakeup bell to bedtime, the rain continued off and on throughout the day, but the sunshine came from the joyful spirit of the campers and staff.
  • Meals: For breakfast we had biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage patties and a fruit bar. For lunch we had copycat chick-fil-a chicken sandwiches, waffle fries and a salad bar. For dinner we had grilled flank steak, roasted red potatoes, haricot verts, homemade rolls and a salad bar. It was fabulous!! At the end of the meal, the campers and staff started the Gus’ chant, and Bryan agreed to treat camp to the candy and soda shack we affectionately call Gus’.
  • EP: Can I get a HOWDY? Tonight we had our first square dance of the session in our Gillespie Gymnasium. We had the best time swinging our partners and line dancing to our favorite songs! I love square dance because everyone can do it! No talent required! The sillier the better, and the rain had us feeling silly tonight!!
