FAST FRIENDS…I looked up the meaning of this phrase today because I was reminded of it as I walked around camp. I couldn’t keep from smiling as I walked around and saw how bonded our cabins are after one week together. I think I always assumed that this phrase meant that you became friends with someone quickly. While that definition works, I found a better one… “any of a group of friends who are often in each other’s company, and appear to be inseparable.” This is what camp friends are, fast friends, often in each other’s company and absolutely inseparable!

These fast friends are why I love our cabin unit! The cabin unit is the heart and soul of the Camp Highlander culture. It fosters a sense of belonging and value in each and every one of its campers. It provides a safety net for healthy risk-taking and comfort for campers to be themselves and be loved. It provides constant company, and after a week it has created fast friends that are inseparable!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Reflect at the Rock: This morning Emily talked to us and reminded us that it’s ok to be different. Not only is it ok to be different, it’s great to be different. It’s also great to have friends who are different from you so you can learn and grow. At camp, we all so different but we share many of hte same goals. It is our differences that make each of special and an integral part of our cabin or our camp community. The world would be pretty boring if we were all the same, so embrace the different that you are and share it with others!
  • Meals: Breakfast this morning was biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, oatmeal, grits and fruit bar. For lunch we had meatball subs, tator tots and salad bar. For dinner we enjoyed grilled chicken, roasted carrots, green salad and hushpuppies. The dining hall erupted when the disco ball went off. Tonight we danced AND had dessert…yummy banana pudding.
  • Weather: It was another beautiful day on Old Forge. It was pretty hot outside today, so I did not hear one camper complain that the riverwater at riverball, or the pool or the lake was “SO COLD!” Today the water was refreshing and so was the cool breeze that met us right around the time the EP started. I just love summers in western North Carolina!
  • EP: Tonight for evening program we had a pirate themed scavenger hunt. Campers were on a hunt for the EP trophy that was stolen by Greg Flintbeard. Each cabin went on search for five clues that would reveal the location of the stolen trophy. The first cabin to discover the treasure (stolen trophy) was Cabin 25!
