Bryan and I want to thank you for sharing your precious children with us. Session A has been truly magical! We have loved watching your children learn more about themselves and others over the past two weeks. They have faced fears, overcome obstacles, resolved conflict, learned lessons and experienced tremendous growth. Most of all, they have had so much FUN!

This session, your children have taught me how important it is to not miss the little things. As adults, we always want to remember the “big picture,” but your children showed me that the true beauty of camp is found in the little things. It’s the little things that have a big impact. Little moments like finding a newk in the creek, singing as you walk to activities, dancing in the dining hall, getting wet when a soaking wet camper hugs you, a few words of encouragement from a friend, the smile you share with others…it’s these little things that build the big picture, the work of art, and this session has been an absolute masterpiece!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Reflect: This morning at reflect, Sophie shared the lessons you would learn if a dog was your teacher. When your loved ones come home, always run to greet them. Dance around when you are happy. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride. When someone is having a bad day, be there for them and love them. If a dog was your teacher, you would learn to never take a moment for granted. Cherish the good moments, and don’t ever let the bad ones keep you down. If a dog was your teacher, you would learn to be carefree and love the life that you have. It’s the only one you get, don’t let it pass you by.
  • Meals: For breakfast this morning we enjoyed warm fluffy waffles, scrambled eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit. Corndogs and macaroni and cheese were served for lunch with a green salad. We ended our day with chipotle chicken and cilantro rice bowls with grilled veggies, black beans, homemade guacamole, queso and chips.
  • Weather: The rain brought in that cool mountain air. Our morning was a little chilly and cloudy, but the bright sun came out and warmed everyone right up. It was a picture perfect beautiful day on Old Forge.
  • EP: Tonight’s evening program was Rock at the Top! Held on the tennis courts, the lip sync battle was great music, great moves and amazing costumes. Definitely my favorite EP of the session!

At opening campfire, I challenged every camper and staff member to embrace the gift of camp each day. I am so proud of how they have squeezed every bit of fun from activities to EPs. They focused on the gift and overlooked the challenges with an attitude of gratitude. Their smiles tell the story of the power of camp. Today as we enjoyed our last day of activities, I saw them hugging their cabinmates tighter, lingering at the activity longer, walking slowly as they soaked up the cool breeze of the day…we didn’t want it to end. Each of us is so grateful to be at camp…to be together…to be making new friends…to be outside and to play!

This is my last blog for the session, because I want to enjoy the masterpiece and not miss a moment on our last day tomorrow. So in closing this session, I want to thank you for making this possible. Thank you for your wonderful support of Camp Highlander and for connecting with us on this blog each day. I hope it has given you a window into our world and that you have felt the spirit of Highlander at home. Let me know in the comment section below!

Our hearts are full of gratitude and love for you! See you Friday!
