Folks associated with Camp Highlander often have fond memories of their special time at camp. Whether you’re a camper, alumni or staff member, we all share the mountain and could tell thousands of stories about our magical mountain home. I have been blessed to be able to call Highlander my home away from home for more than four decades, and I am happy to reminisce about the past through rare photos found in the camp archives.

The Wall – 1975

In 1975, Camp Highlander moved from Highlands, North Carolina to its present location in Mills River. This was also the very first year that the Challenge Wall was put in place in Wilderness Camp. Although many things have changed at camp since 1975, the Challenge Wall remains in Wilderness Camp where thousands have tried – and many have succeeded – in conquering the 12’6” beast. Used in regular daily activities as well as in Color War, the Challenge Wall has been the site of unmatched perseverance, impressive sportsmanship and extraordinary teamwork for nearly forty years.

These days, campers and staff are able to enjoy two different types of walls: the Challenge Wall and the Climbing Wall. The Climbing Wall is 36’ and based in the corner of the athletic field. The Climbing Wall offers a completely different kind of experience; it has holds, overhangs and different routes to challenge anyone who attempt to reach the top.

In this classic photo, campers and staff are using the Challenge Wall to participate in an team-building initiative game. This particular game has everyone start at the bottom and the team must use collaborative thinking and problem solving to get each person over the flat side of the wall. We still use this exercise at camp every summer, as well as with any school or corporate groups that visit the mountain when camp is not in session. It’s a great way to bond with cabinmates and accomplish personal goals. What are some of the memories you have of the Challenge Wall?

One Love,
Gaynell
