Sundays at Camp Highlander are intentionally slower, less structured, and always full of sweet surprises. They offer the perfect balance of rest (we sleep in late and enjoy a two-hour rest hour), reflection, and entertainment. After a packed week of adventures, activities, off-camp trips, and high-energy Evening Programs, Sundays give campers and staff the space to pause, reset, and reconnect — with themselves and with each other.

Speaking of rest, our campers and staff need it, because Color War is coming… not so fast, though — I can’t tell you when! The campers and staff are on edge, looking for a clue around every corner. I wore my green Sunday Funday shirt today, and word spread fast: “Melissa is wearing green!” At Campfire tonight, I mentioned the exciting week ahead, and campers started screaming like the break was about to happen right there at campfire. They are so excited and ready for the competition to start. Unfortunately, the only game they will be playing for now is the waiting game!

• Sunday Chapel: This morning for chapel we read The Rainbow Fish. This is a book we’ve been reading at chapel since it was published in 1992, and the message is even more valuable today than when it was written.The Rainbow Fish is the most beautiful fish in the ocean, hoarding his shimmering scales because he believes his sparkle is what makes him special. It’s only when he begins giving his scales away, one by one, that he discovers something surprising: he’s happier, surrounded by friends who once swam past him. We live in a world that promotes self; it tells us to hold tight to what we have — our stuff, our knowledge, our time — because sharing means we have less. But the Rainbow Fish teaches us the opposite is true: when we give generously, we don’t lose our shine, we multiply it in everyone around us. When we are generous and kind, we actually gain more than the person who has been given the gift. I reminded our camp family they shouldn’t be afraid to share their Gus’s candy, their flashlight, their seat by the campfire, even their kindness — because like the Rainbow Fish, what you give away has a way of coming back to you as friendship. Joy is found when we stop focusing on ourselves and start sharing love and laughter with those around us. *Weather: We woke up to sunny skies with the humidity that warned us rain was in our future. Just after campers got to their cabins for rest hour, the sky opened up and dumped rain on camp for almost two hours. The timing was pretty great because there is nothing better than rain on a tin roof to put you right to sleep. Late afternoon the rain stopped, but not early enough for the ground to dry up and let us have campfire outside.
• Meals: For breakfast we had blueberry muffins, scrambled eggs, sausage links, grits, oatmeal and fresh fruit, yogurt and granola. For lunch we had grilled cheese, grilled ham & cheese, tomato soup and french fries, a salad bar and a sandwich bar. Dinner was our chef Ateeba’s delicious flank steak, oven roasted potatoes, haricots verts, a salad bar and a sandwich bar.
• Sunday Funday: We call it Sunday Funday because it is always such a fun day! After watching the storm that was coming our way, we announced at lunch that our afternoon activity would be watching the World Cup in the gym. After the rest hour bell, campers were heading to the gym, expecting their traditional afternoon snack, but they were pleasantly surprised to see the Dolly’s Trolley waiting for them. Dolly’s is the BEST ice cream around, and we even have a flavor named after us - Highlander High Tide. It is coffee ice cream with chocolate fudge and brownie chunks in it - absolutely delicious. We had foosball tables, giant connect four and other games in the gym for campers to play, and it was a nice restful and relaxing way to spend our Sunday afternoon.
• EP: Tonight’s EP was Campfire, followed by Cookies and Milk in the dining hall! We recognized our Honor Campers and Honor Cabins for the week. These campers and cabins have stood out as leaders and positive role models this session. Congratulations to our Honor Campers and Honor Cabins!
