Today was the first camper’s choice day of the session, and we were ALL IN for the fun and adventure! We had a fantastic day of activities with our new friends and camp family. Campers had a wide variety of activities to choose from that filled their day with unforgettable memories and lots of laughs.

All of our traditional camp activities were open for those who want more time at their favorite activity or prefer to work on their Master of the Mills. However, our very creative and fun cabin counselors also offer some non-traditional activities that campers get super excited about. Some of those include fishing on Silver Lake, reading in the library, friendship bracelet making, Taylor Swift appreciation, weightlifting and more. It always amazes me that these classes get more sign-ups than two or three other activities combined.

I love how camper’s choice gives our children the opportunity to practice decision making, by choosing their schedule and planning their day, and it also allows them the opportunity to socialize with campers from different cabins or different age groups. It makes me smile when I see siblings use this day as a time to reconnect with their brother or sister on the basketball court, at the ropes course or at cooking class.

My favorite choice that your children make at camp is kindness. I love to see how they help and support their cabinmates and friends. I saw a camper who was struggling today, missing her mom and dad, being comforted by her cabinmates, then smiling and running off to play with them. There were campers scared to go on the crow’s nest and a friend offered a hand of comfort and encouragement. The compassion and care that campers show for their friends is precious and unique. This is why I always say that, at camp, kindness is the coolest kind of cool!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Reflect at the Rock: Today at Reflect Virginia told us a story that asked “Are you a Potato An Egg or a Coffee Bean” which talked about overcoming hardships and using our hard moments to learn and grow. In life, things happen around us and things happen to us. The only thing that truly matters is your choice of how you react to it and what you make of it.
  • Weather: We woke up to cool temperatures, which made our sleep fantastic last night. The skies were slightly overcast with a cool breeze in the air. The sun came out for part of the day, and then we had a brief rain shower just as EP started. But I hear that tomorrow is gonna be a bright, bright sun-shiny day!
  • Meals: For breakfast this morning we had belgian waffles, scrambled eggs, bacon and a fresh fruit and yogurt bar. For lunch we had french dip sandwiches and tater tots and a salad bar. For dinner we had sweet and sour chicken with vegetables, fried rice, egg rolls and a salad bar. The disco ball went off after dinner, and we all enjoyed Highlander’s Ice Cream Dream!
  • EP: Tonight’s evening program was Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Haunted House. This was like a Highlander halloween, Hogwarts style. Campers went trick or treating at the office, walked through the Hogwarts haunted house and enjoyed a costume dance party in the gym. It was super fun and a great time was had by all!
