Favorite Details of the Day

  • Reflect at the Rock: Today Ava, one of our head counselors in girls camp, read a love letter to Highlander. She talked about her memories from the moment she arrived at camp, the sounds, the smells and feeling she had of being home in a place she had never been before. Now 11 years later, she says that she has Camp Highlander to thank for the many life lessons she has learned…like being kind, how to find the positive in all things, how to be a good friend, selflessness and helping others. As she looks at the short three weeks she has left on Old Forge, she is choosing to be grateful for all camp has given her and to embrace each day she has here. She encouraged each of us to do the same, because camp is always here, but we all at some point move on.
  • Weather: We had picture perfect weather on camp today. It was sunny, warm and there was a slight breeze that ebbed and flowed through our day. Honestly, this was a perfect mountain summer day!
  • Meals: For breakfast this morning we had Belgian waffles, scrambled eggs, sausage links and a fresh fruit and yogurt bar. For lunch we had chicken and cheese quesadillas (our most popular lunch at camp), chips and salsa, homemade guacamole, queso and a salad bar. For dinner we had a Thanksgiving feast of roasted turkey and gravy, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, homemade biscuits and a salad bar! The disco ball went off at the end of the meal and the dining hall went crazy…banana pudding with fresh sliced bananas, nilla wafers and whipped cream. YUMMY!
  • EP: Tonight’s evening program was a camp favorite…counselor hunt. The evening program staff always keep this EP a secret from staff and campers because it is one the best! The campers and staff were so excited at dinner when counselor hunt was announced as tonight’s EP. So what is counselor hunt…well, imagine a giant game of hide and seek on about 30 acres of land where you are searching for 50 people hiding in the woods, decked in camouflage. The cabins set out to find the missing staff and each staff member was worth a certain amount of points. The cabin with the most points won the event. Tonight’s winner was Cabin 1!
