When I was in college, I worked as a camp counselor at the summer camp I grew up going to as a child. I loved it so much! That was a long time ago, so I don’t remember all the details of those summers, but I will never forget my awe over the weather of a North Carolina summer in the mountains. For this Louisiana girl, I felt like I was experiencing two different seasons in one day…sweatshirts in the morning and swimsuits by noon! I remember calling my parents and grandparents every Sunday when counselors got to use the pay phone, and the first question they would ask me was “So how’s the weather?” My answer was always the same, “the kind of weather that dreams are made of.”

Today we had one of those dreamy weather days, and after 22 summers at Highlander I still want to pinch myself that I live here! It was an incredibly beautiful day on Old Forge Mountain. Truly perfect! We woke up to chilly temperatures in the low 60’s, and the campers and staff came down to Reflect at the Rock in sweatshirts. By the start of first period, 10:00am, the temperatures were in the upper 70’s and climbed all the way to 83 degrees for the high. The sun was just glorious all day. It was hot, but the perfect kind of hot - hot with a breeze.

In a delightful way, the amazing weather we have this session is a picture of the beautiful bond that has been built in our cabins. Just like the calmness in the air at camp today, this session has had an overwhelming feeling of comfort and ease for our cabin groups. Your children have made some unforgettable memories with lifelong friends, and we have all felt welcomed, loved and at home here at Highlander. This is what dreams are made of!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Reflect at the Rock: This morning Mac reminded us that age is just a number, and we are never too old to be kids and enjoy camp. We tend to live our lives looking forward to the next birthday when we are younger and dreading it when we are older. He reminded us to live in the moment and enjoy being a kid!
  • Weather: True perfection!
  • Meals: For breakfast this morning we had biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage patties and a fresh fruit and yogurt bar. For lunch we had grilled chicken club sandwiches, sweet potato fries and a salad bar. For dinner we had a flank steak, red roasted potatoes, haricot verts, homemade rolls and a salad bar!
  • EP: Tonight’s EP was square dance. The weather was great so we were lucky to be dancing our hearts out on the field tonight! There is something about these summer square dancing nights that make you want to freeze time! Tonight was simply magical!
