We love Saturdays at Camp Highlander. Today we were walking on sunshine…literally! The sun was out and there was a skip in our step that we haven’t seen since Opening Day! My heart was full as I walked around to activities today and noticed that full cabins had signed up for camper’s choice activities as a group. The bonds are strong in these Session A cabins, and the campers couldn’t bear a whole day without their cabinmates by their side. This is why I love our cabin unit. It’s not about what you are doing, but WHO you are doing it with! Our campers will testify that their cabinmates are the BEST part of their camp experience. There is no denying that the zipline is exhilarating and the blob is awesome, but without your friends these are just experiences. Your friends are the ones that make those experiences a memory. We have made so many wonderful memories this session and more importantly made some life-long friends.

Saturdays are special at camp for many reasons…sleeping in, Dunkin Donuts for breakfast, camper’s choice and the biggest EP of the session, Country Fair! It was fantastic! The Gillespie Gymnasium was transformed into a down-home country festival. The activity counselors were responsible for setting up booths with games, food and prizes. Session A campers look forward to this EP every year, and tonight’s fair did not disappoint. Everyone comes decked out in their western wear, cowboy boots, hats, bandanas and denim to enjoy everything from fried oreos to bull riding!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Special Events; Cabin 16 decided to have a talent show on the friendship deck during rest hour. They invited Cabin 15 and some camp moms to watch. All of their performances were awesome! Also, there were lots of HBA games played today since the sun was out! Yay!
  • Weather: We awoke to Carolina blue skies and sunshine this morning! There was a nice chill in the air from all the rain we’ve had, but the sun was shining and we were all so excited to enjoy our favorite activities with our favorite friends!
  • Meals: For breakfast we had Dunkin Donuts, scrambled eggs, bacon and a fruit bar. For lunch we had chicken fingers, grilled chicken fingers, french fries and a salad bar. For dinner we had Dale’s world famous BBQ. We had pulled pork, pulled chicken, coleslaw, baked beans, macaroni and cheese and a salad bar. It was a fantastic day of food at Highlander!
