At Highlander, we thrive on structure and routine. We operate on the same schedule each day, and I love that this rhythm provides comfort and confidence for our campers. Because we operate on this routine of expectation, when we change the schedule in the slightest…we make a day special!

Today was one of those special occasions…Sleep In Saturday. While this is a small change from the regular routine of camp, this day is a cherished gift by every camper and staff member on the mountain. Wake-up was at 8:45 instead of 8:00. Breakfast was at 9:15 instead of 8:45 AND there was NO CABIN INSPECTION!!! All of these things add up to start our day feeling extra rested and in great spirits! We didn’t have Reflect at the Rock or assembly this morning, so we jumped right into activities after breakfast and never stopped. Last night when we announced the good news at dinner, the screams from the campers and staff were deafening! Sleeping in late, Krispy Kreme donuts and camper’s choice day…it just doesn’t get any better than a Saturday like this!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Meals: For breakfast we had Krispy Kreme donuts, scrambled eggs, sausage and a fruit bar. For lunch we had copycat chick-fil-a sandwiches, waffle fries and a salad bar. For dinner we had sweet and sour chicken with peppers and onions, fried rice, egg rolls and salad bar.
  • Weather: Sunshine, sunshine, sunshine on this beautiful Saturday. There were a couple times a light misty shower came down, but it was refreshing on a hot day!
  • EP: Tonight’s EP was Monte Carlo, our Session B carnival extraordinaire. The gym was transformed into a fair for our campers to play games, win prizes, eat yummy food and spend time with friends. It was SO MUCH FUN!

We like our routines at Camp Highlander, and we also love our traditions. One of my favorite camp traditions is our big EP in Session B, Monte Carlo. This is a night that has something for everyone and more! Tonight the gym was transformed into a carnival, and we had a skeeball station, a basketball station, arm wrestling, duck races, face painting, caricatures, balloon darts, cotton candy, popcorn, rootbeer floats and more. The campers were having an absolute blast, and I could not get enough. I found myself stopped in the middle of the gym as I turned in circles to take it all in. Laughter and cheers filled the space, and I witnessed the smiles on every single face. It was truly a night to remember!
