This morning in the dining hall someone said to me, “Last session, last opening day of 2022!” I could hardly believe it. I smiled back at them and said, “Last, but certainly not least!” We have had a fantastic summer, but we, as a staff, have been looking forward to Session C with great anticipation and are so grateful it is finally here!!

Today we welcomed 230 returning campers and 50 brand new members to the Highlander family. As our returning campers turned on Dalton Road, the feeling of home came over them with the familiar smell of the Carolina pines. Turning into the camp gates, they saw the same green buildings and at the gym they were greeted with the same Highlander spirit that they know and love.

That spirit is what welcomed each and every new camper into the wonderful world of Highlander. As new campers stepped out of the car and were greeted by their friendly counselors and joyful cabinmates, I saw the nervousness disappear and their smiles grow. It won’t be long before these new campers are calling Highlander home too.

It's a funny thing about coming home. Looks the same, smells the same, feels the same. You'll realize what's changed is you.

F. Scott Fitzgerald

I love this quote about home because it accurately describes the feeling of coming back to camp. Things smell the same, look the same, feel the same and really don’t change that much from year to year. That’s what makes home so wonderful- it is safe, comfortable and constant. The biggest change to our summer, or our session, is your children. It is their light, their joy and their energy that will make this session so magical.

We are honored to share the gift of camp with them over the next two and a half weeks, and we look forward to giving you a window into our world through this blog each day. Thank you for making it all possible, and stay tuned becuase the fun has just begun!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Meals: For breakfast we had blueberry muffins, scrambled eggs, bacon and a fruit bar. For lunch we had grilled cheese, tomato soup and a salad bar. For dinner we had yummy pot roast with carrots and potatoes, delicious rolls and salad bar. After dinner, the disco ball went off letting us know two things were about to happen - either we were dancing in the dining hall or we were having dessert. Tonight, we did both! After doing the Cupid Shuffle, we enjoyed some famous Highlander Mudslide!
  • Weather: We were blessed with beautiful weather and mild temperatures this morning to welcome our Session C campers and families. Half way into third period, the rain started but didn’t slow us down! Campers enjoyed a fantastic afternoon at activities. As the rain stopped mid afternoon, the temperatures started to drop. It was a perfect night for a very comfortable night’s sleep.
  • EP: Tonight’s EP was our opening Campfire! This is one of our oldest camp traditions, and it is the perfect way to welcome campers home to Highlander!
