Outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking, or camping have become more and more popular in society over the past few years, especially during the pandemic. These outdoor adventures promote a healthy lifestyple, provide social connection, increase learning new skills, and offer a deep connection with nature. People who pursue these activities in today’s culture have been called “adventure seekers,” but at Highlander we just call them campers!

Today was another day of adventure seeking at Highlander. Adventure included everything from trying new activities on camp like yoga or pottery to exploring the Western North Carolina mountains off camp on day hikes or white water rafting trips. Each adventure holds amazing opportunity for our campers to grow closer to another and to nature, while learning new skills or perfecting old ones.

One of the things that I love about Highlander is the structure and schedule of the day. While the schedule for every day is constant, no two days are the same. The daily schedule provides the comfort for campers to know what to expect each day. Yet, every day holds new adventures, new opprotunities and new memories to be made because no two days are exactly alike. From meals to activities to evening programs, each day has an element of surprise, challenge and joy that we didn’t anticipate, making a summer at Camp Highlander, the Adventure Seeker’s dream vacation!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Reflect: At reflect this morning, Beth talked about our purpose in life. Sometimes you may wonder why you are here and what your true purpose is on this planet. While there is no simple answer, one thing is clear: we are here to fulfill whatever path that we have been given and to live out our lives with love for one another. No matter what obstacles we may face and what trials and tribulations come our way, we will face it with courage, honesty, integrity, and faith.
  • Meals: Today we started our mornings off with hot pancakes, sausage patties, scrambled eggs, and fresh fruit. For lunch we had a camp favorite: chicken tenders and fries with some veggies and hummus. It’s Thursday, which means we had cookout for dinner! The entire camp enjoyed hamburgers, hotdogs and veggie burgers, pasta salad, chips, and watermelon slices out on the land sports field. Everyone cheered when the Dolly’s trolley drove down and served delicious scoops of ice cream. Yum!
  • Weather: Today was another beautiful day with plenty of sunshine! We had a brief afternoon shower, but that just cooled down the hot day!
  • EP: Tonight was the much anticipated Mr. Highlander competition. Counselors competed for the esteemed Mr. Highlander title in an amazing competition of talent, charisma, and style. Everyone had so much fun cheering the competitiors along. After a tough competition, Isaiah Watts was crowned Mr. Highlander 2021!
