Today it was raining positivity at Camp Highlander. Your children are absolutely amazing and loving camp so much! When I woke up to the rain that felt like it would never end, I sighed thinking this would be a long day. As I looked around the dining hall at breakfast, I realized that I was the only one affected by the rain…not the campers, not the staff. They were smiling, cheering, singing, dancing and excited about the day ahead, rain or shine!

Thank God for the perspective of children - for the way they see the world as an opportunity, not an obstacle. Today was not an obstacle for our campers to overcome wtih all the rain this morning, it was an opportunity to play in the puddles, sing in the rain and let their smiles provide the sunshine. Today I am so thankful for the rain because it reminded me that the Highlander spirit is bigger than the rain, bigger than the challenges and bigger than any bad day. The Highlander spirit cannot be stopped! Come rain or shine, we make the most of every single second we have at camp, and today was no exception.

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Reflect: To keep everyone dry, this morning’s reflect was held in the dining hall. Spencer talked about the importance of persistance. Success does not come without failure; J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter manuscript got rejected by a dozen publishers before her books became world famous. Michael Jordan didn’t make his high school basketball team and now he’s one of the most famous professional basketball players. Success is not the absence of failure; it’s the persistence through failure.
  • Meals: We started off our day with warm biscuits and gravy, sausage patties, fresh fruit, and eggs. Our lunch was turkey ciabatta sanwhiches, green salad and chips. For dinner we ate baked ziti, roasted broccoli, italian salad, and garlic bread.
  • Weather: After a whole week of sunshine, the rainclouds finally rolled in. It rained all through the night and into the morning. The skies cleared up after lunch and the rest of the day was nice and sunny.
  • EP: It’s Tuesday, you know what that means…SQUARE DANCE! Everyone had a great time at our final square dance of the session, swinging their partners and dancing until their boots fell off. It was so much fun!

When life throws you a rainy day, play in the puddles.

The positivity continued onto the field at square dance after dinner. The campers and staff were so excited for our last square dance of the session on the athletic field. It was fantastic! It felt like camp, like everything was right in the world.

The rain brought in a cool evening chill that had campers and staff running for their sweatshirts. Usually at square dance we are so hot, and Mac always says “Are you sweating?” Everyone yells “YES.” “Then you’re doing it wrong,” Mac replies. Well tonight, no one was sweating. We were comfortable as we danced around the field under the night sky. No one was doing it wrong! The new campers knew all the moves to the dances tonight and everyone was cheering and smiling as they swang their partner. Everything about the night was perfect, and to us here at Camp Highalnder, all is right with our world!
