It was another beautiful day at Camp Highlander, and the sunshine served as the perfect backdrop for today’s challenge…JUST DO IT. This morning, I challenged our Kickoff campers to give their all to camp today and all week. I encouraged them to make the most of the opportunity they’ve been given at camp, to enjoy the activities, embrace the friendships and maximize the fun. I encouraged them to try new things, to make new friends and to JUST DO IT, even when you don’t think you want to.

Well, our campers embraced the challenge, and I was overwhelmed with stories at lunch of overcoming the fear of jumping off the blob, hitting a bullseye, flying down the zipline or making it to the top of the climbing wall. The joy on the faces of these campers as they shared their story of doing that one thing they were afraid to do…it was priceless! They couldn’t wait to tell me all about it, and I knew that these moments of courage would shape them for facing hard things in their future. This is the gift of camp!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • Reflect at the Rock: Today Melissa talked about trying new things and taking advantage of the gift of camp. Don’t just sit back and watch camp happen…be like Nike and Just Do It!
  • Meals: Breakfast fueled us for a day of fun with frech toast sticks, scrambled eggs, sausage links, fresh fruit, grits and oatmeal. Campers loved the delicious baked ziti, roasted broccoli, garlic bread and italian salad we had for lunch. Dinner was chicken fajitas, mexican rice, black beans, homemade guacamole and chips and queso. The dining hall erupted when the disco ball went off, and we all enjoyed some cinnamon and sugar churros for dessert but of course we had to dance first!
  • EP: Tonight’s evening program was a pirate themed scavenger hunt. During dinner, a rogue pirate came in and stole the EP trophy. Our campers were given the mission to find that pirate and recover the EP trophy for Camp Highlander. Cabin 11 found the pirate, solved the mystery and took home the EP trophy tonight!
  • Weather: Campers woke up to a cool and cloudy morning on the mountain. We had a brief rain during rest hour that provided the perfect background noise for a lovely nap. The sun came out just in time for an afternoon full of activities!

Tonight’s evening program was the perfect ending to our very busy day. We had more fun today than most of our campers are used to, and sometimes playing can flat wear you out. As the sun went down, so did the campers. Today was the perfect example of a commom camp slogan…PLAY HARD to SLEEP HARD…and I have no doubt that they will!

We can’t wait for morning to try new things, make new friends and squeeze the most out of another camp day. My heart is full of the smiles, the love and the joy from your children that filled this mountain today. Thank you for making this possible. Thank you for your incredible support and love over the past challenging year. My heart is so full after our first full day of camp because once again we were able to live out our mission of love.
