Tonight we had Country Fair - the signature EP and arguably most popular EP of the session. The Gillespie Gymnasium was transformed into a down-home country festival. The activity counselors were responsible for setting up booths with games, food and prizes. Session A campers look forward to this EP every year. They come decked out in their western wear, cowboy boots, hats, bandanas and denim.

As the gym doors flew open to welcome all the campers and staff, we were overwhelmed with the sweet smells of cotton candy, freshly popped pocorn, fried oreos and jambalaya. With tickets in hand, every camper raced in to enjoy the fun games andsome tasty treats. There was a tractor pull, a shooting range, a movie theater, a fruit stand, quilt making, bull riding, calf roping, ring toss and more.

I walked around the gym, grinning from ear to ear. They were having so much fun! As a mom, I kept thinking…I wish their parents could see them now. So I put together this little video that offers a window into our little world. It is a wonderful world at Camp Highlander.

Favorite Details of the Day:

  • Sleep In Saturday: Our campers were surprised this morning with a late wake-up when the bell rang at 8:30. We didn’t have Reflect at the Rock this morning, and we had a late breakfast. Even though we only sleep in 30 minutes, this is a very popular treat!
  • Meals: Breakfast was Blueberry Muffins, Eggs, Bacon and Fruit Bar. Lunch was Walking Tocos (fill your bag of fritos with the toppings of your choice for a delcious taco in a bag.) The campers LOVED it! Dinner was the kickoff to our Country Fair with Camp Highlander BBQ - smoked chicken, pulled pork, mac and cheese, baked beans and green salad. Yum, yum, yum!!
  • Camper Choice Day: Today was a beautiful day of campers doing exactly what they wanted to do. There were lots of campers in the lake kayaking and canoeing. The pool was packed on this hot day, but so was the field with the friendly competition of soccer and ultimate frisbee. We also took our first tubing trip down the Mills River of the summer.
  • EP: The Session A Tradition - Country Fair. See the video for a peek at the fun we had tonight on Old Forge Mountain.
